Auland onions
Did you know,...
that onion is one of the oldest cultivated plants of mankind? Its origin is in the stepppe area of western and central Asia. Onion is considered a healing, flavouring and vegetable plant since more than 5000 years.
In ancient Egypt, people used to sacrifice onion to the gods. Actually, the workers building pyramids were also paid in onions. In the Roman Empire, onion was a basic foodstuff present in every household. In medieval times, onion served also as an amulet against plague. This tuber became known in Austria only several years after Christ when Roman soldiers brought it across the Alps. Planting different sorts of onions which differ in form, colour and taste began just in the 15th century in the Netherlands.
Onion did not have only supporters. Socrates claimed onion to be a "horrible stinky plant appropriate only for gamecocks and bullies".
The modern biochemical research supported the healing effects of the onion: it is rich in ethereal oils, contains many precious vitamins (mainly vitamin C and B), minerals such as sulphur, iron, kalium, magnesium, fluorine, calcium, manganese and phosphorus, flavonoids with dehydrating effects and the herbal hormone glucinin lowering the blood sugar level. Via its natural antibiotics the onion juice is an effective preventive means against cough and hoarseness. The onion promotes metabolism, supports haematopoiesis, lowers blood sugar level and promotes digestion. Furthermore it has blood clearing and dehydrating effects.
Cosmetic characteristics have been also proved: applied on the skin, the onion promotes hair growing. It also has skin softening effects and fights thus unpopular skin impurities.
